2. Which Social Security payment rule applies?

The 3rd-of-the-month rule includes people who received or applied for benefits before May 1997. If SSA assigns you a different schedule, follow your notice.

2026 and 2027 are checked against the published SSA calendars.

Dates follow the payment rule for the listed schedule month. SSI pays for that month; Social Security generally pays for the preceding month. “Paid earlier” marks a weekend or federal holiday shift. For spouse or survivor benefits, use the birthday of the person whose work record pays your benefit.

Receiving SSI as well as SSDI? Choose “Both” in the calculator. Concurrent recipients generally receive SSI on the 1st and Social Security on the 3rd, adjusted for holidays and weekends.

Common payment date questions

When are Social Security and SSDI payments sent?

Most follow the 2nd, 3rd or 4th Wednesday based on the record holder’s birthday. People who received or applied for benefits before May 1997, and people receiving both Social Security and SSI, generally follow the 3rd-of-the-month rule. Your SSA notice takes priority for individual exceptions.

Whose birthday should I use?

Use the birthday of the person whose work record the Social Security benefit is paid on. If you receive spouse or survivor benefits, this may be your spouse’s or the deceased worker’s birthday. SSI does not use birthday groups.

Is the 2027 schedule official?

The 2027 dates have been checked against SSA Publication 05-10031 for 2027. The 2028 full-year schedule is labeled as a rule-based estimate and has not been independently verified against an official 2028 calendar.

Will my bank deposit the money early?

Some banks provide early access, but this calculator shows SSA’s scheduled payment dates. It cannot confirm a bank’s processing time, your account balance or whether SSA has issued your individual payment.

Can I save these dates to my calendar?

Yes. After calculating, choose Add to calendar to download an .ics file for Apple Calendar, Google Calendar or Outlook. It contains all-day events on deposit dates. The file follows calendar-year deposits; the table labels the benefit month separately.
