Quick answer: In the U.S., when a federal holiday falls on a weekend, it is often observed on a nearby weekday. Payments can shift because banks are closed on the observed day.
Observed holiday rule (plain English)
- If a holiday falls on Saturday → it is commonly observed on Friday.
- If a holiday falls on Sunday → it is commonly observed on Monday.
How this affects Social Security / SSI payments
When a scheduled payment date lands on a weekend or a (observed) federal holiday, the payment generally moves to the nearest prior business day.
2026 example: SSI is scheduled for January 1. Because January 1 is a federal holiday, the payment is typically delivered on the prior business day (late December).
